How to Use BetterTTV Emotes on Twitch and YouTube

Ever come across words like :lul:, :monkaS:, or :sadge: in Twitch chat? These are actually popular Twitch emotes. If you can't see them, you might be missing the BetterTTV (also known as BetterTwitchTV or BTTV) extension. With BTTV, you can unlock an array of emotes and enhance your chat experience on both Twitch and YouTube live streams. In this guide, we will explain how to install and use the BetterTTV. 

Installation

You can download BetterTTV from the official website or your browser's extension store. BetterTwitchTV is available for Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Opera, Safari, and others.

If you download from the official site, you will be redirected to your browser extension store to complete the installation. Click the "Add" or "Install" button in the extension store.

After installing the BetterTTV extension, it will request permission to be used in YouTube live chats. If you don’t want to enable BTTV emotes on YouTube, simply close the tab. You can enable it later from BetterTTV's settings or your browser.

How to add BTTV emotes to your channel

1. Log in to the BetterTTV website;

2. Authorize BetterTTV to access your Twitch account;

  1. Click on the Emotes tab;

  1. Browse the available emotes and select your favorite;
  2. Click "Update Emote Sets"  and put a checkmark next to “Channel”.

How to add custom emotes to BetterTTV

  1. To upload your custom emotes to BTTV, click “Dashboard” on the top left-hand side of your screen;
  2. Select the “Upload Emote” button located in the “Emote” section;

  1. Fill in the form and attach files with custom emotes;

After some time, your emotes will be approved and you will be able to try them out in chat.

How to enable BetterTTV emotes on Twitch

  1. You can access BetterTTV settings on Twitch in two ways:

• Click on your profile icon in Twitch's top-right corner and select "BetterTTV Settings" from the dropdown menu.

• Open any live stream and click the chat settings button by clicking the gear icon. Scroll down and choose “BetterTTV Settings”.

  1. In the first tab of the BTTV chat settings window, scroll down to find the 'Emotes Menu'. Toggle it on, then close the window.

  1. To use BetterTTV emotes in Twitch chat, type the emote code enclosed in double colons (for example, :monkaS:) or click on the BetterTTV logo to open the BetterTTV emote menu.

How to enable BetterTTV emotes on YouTube

  1. Open any YouTube live-stream chat and click on the three dots to access BetterTTV Settings.

  1. You will see the same settings window as on Twitch. Scroll down and toggle on 'Emotes Menu'.

  1. To add BetterTTV emotes to your YouTube live chat, simply click on the BetterTTV logo and choose an image from the emote menu.
